What is it conservatives think will happen if we just do away with social support programs entirely?
Realistically, do they think getting rid of welfare programs like SNAP and Head Start will suddenly make people not be poor, or not have kids they can't afford... or even suddenly get a job?
Because a majority of welfare recipients have jobs... just not jobs that pay enough to live on. But oh, we can't increase the minimum wage or we'll destroy the economy (despite the fact that states that have chosen to independently increase their minimum wage have seen an increase in available jobs and a decrease in unemployment).
You can't have a low minimum wage AND no social assistance. You've got to pick one or the other, or you're dooming us to a gradual downward spiral.
10 AnswersCivic Participation7 years agoIs anyone else constantly getting logged out of Yahoo Answers?
Ever since they switched over to this new layout, I get logged out of the site every few clicks... sometimes just in the time it takes me to log in (again), type an answer, and hit submit.
It's not my browser. This happens in multiple browsers, on multiple computers, and I've tried clearing out the cache several times to see it that would fix the issue. It doesn't.
Bizarrely enough, when the site glitches and switches me over to the old layout for a few days (which seems to be happening less and less frequently), it doesn't happen at all.
4 AnswersYahoo Answers7 years agoWhat is wrong with this site?
What on earth has Yahoo done in the last week that has borked this site beyond belief?
As I surf, it randomly switches from the new layout to the old layout.
It constantly logs me out when I'm in the middle of doing something.
The rate buttons randomly stop working.
The submit buttons randomly stop working (and once you click them, your text is locked, so you can't copy it, reload the page, and paste it back in).
And now today I keep getting "failed to load data" messages at random when I browse different categories.
4 AnswersYahoo Answers7 years agoWhy does Boehner think the House's Congress-members-only gym is an "essential service"?
Boehner's office ordered the House's private gym for members of Congress be kept open during the government shutdown, even while the gym for Congressional staffer is closed. How does that qualify as "essential"?
5 AnswersPolitics8 years agoIf cutting government spending is supposedly so great for the economy, why is it making things worse in Greece?
For those of you who have forgotten, or just don't pay attention to international economic news, about 2 years ago, Greece adopted a policy of slashing government spending in the hopes of pulling themselves out of a deep recession.
It's now two years later, and not only has their economy not recovered, but the very people who proposed the plan and were responsible for implementing it are publicly saying it was a mistake and has had the opposite effect it was intended to have.
I don't pretend to be an economics expert. But it's hard to argue with real-world results. So I suppose my question here is... if there is already a notable real-world example of such policies NOT working as intended, why are so many people adamant that the U.S. adopt a similar spending plan?
7 AnswersGovernment8 years agoWeak signal on Element HDTV?
I have an older (probably 7 or 8 years at this point) model Element 720p HDTV set that I have hooked up to an HD antenna on my roof. It pulls in about 15 channels, but only 2 or 3 of them come in with a decent signal.
My other two TVs have absolutely no problem at all, so I know it's not the antenna position.
I've tried connecting one of my other (newer) TVs to the same cable, and it has no signal problems, so it's not the cable coming in from the antenna.
I'm wondering if maybe the built-in tuner is going bad (or if it's just out of date)... though it had no issues with reception when I had cable television in my house.
Any idea on how I can boost the signal strength on this TV? It's a nice little set otherwise (works fine for game consoles, DVD player, Roku box, etc.), and I don't particularly want to replace it just because it doesn't get along with my antenna.
8 AnswersTVs9 years agoRon Paul supporters... What do you think of his "internet manifesto" denouncing net neutrality/public domain?
... especially given that he came out against SOPA/PIPA. One would think he would see copyright and the public domain as the government-granted monopoly that it is...
2 AnswersPolitics9 years agoTaxable freelance income?
Last year, I made about $900 doing freelance web development (from home, not for my full time employer), and I'm not sure how or where to declare that income.
About half the sites I've looked at have said I should declare it the same as if I'd received a 1099 misc form for it.
The other half say I should file a Schedule C (Profit or Loss from Business). But I don't really have a business, per se... I just did some freelance work for a former employer. Schedule C seems to be intended for someone operating an actual business.

4 AnswersUnited States9 years agoGun ownership in the state of Illinois?
I recently received an antique shotgun from my grandfather as part of my inheritance (he's giving certain items to family members while he's still alive to ensure they go to the people he wants them to go to). I have never owned a firearm of any kind.
What must I do to legally possess a gun in the state of Illinois if the gun was given to me as a gift from a relative (i.e. not purchased through either a dealer or from private party)? At the very least, I assume I need to obtain a FOID card.
4 AnswersLaw Enforcement & Police1 decade agoAnyone know this movie?
I'm looking for a movie I saw several months ago on Comcast's OnDemand service. I think it was one of the free FEARnet movies, but I can't find it listed on their site.
It was about a group of people trying to survive a zombie apocalypse by hiding out in some kind of bunker (may have been an old power station). I remember that the zombies had something to do with radiation from a comet that had passed close to the earth the previous night, and one of the characters was a former porn star turned over-protective mother.
5 AnswersMovies1 decade agoHow to get rid of plantar warts?
I've had a nasty plantar wart (wart on the bottom of the foot) for a couple months now. I've tried the OTC gel that's supposed to dissolve them, but it's in a spot that get a lot of pressure put on it when I walk, and about a week into using the gel, it's so sore that I just can stand it, and have to stop using it.
Is there a better way?
5 AnswersSkin Conditions1 decade agoAnyone know this movie?
I'm looking for a movie I saw probably 10 years ago on late night TV. It was either Chinese or Japanese... I'm leaning more toward Chinese, though... dubbed (really badly) in English.
It was about three woman, and some sort of demon emperor who was stealing baby boys. One of the women could become invisible, one of them rode a motorcycle, and the other was some kind of masked crime fighter.
The one scene I remember in detail is when the masked woman was trying to get one of the stolen babies back and she was fighting the other two in some sort of warehouse. She has to catch the baby as it falls, but it hits it's head on a nail on the way down, and later dies at the hospital.
Anyone know this movie? I'd really like to see it again.
1 AnswerMovies1 decade agoPreventing multiple requests for the same file?
Recently one of my websites has been getting hit hard by (usually) short periods of time where there are multiple requests for the same file from the server. It's always an image file, and it's usually from the same range of IP addresses. I'm talking upwards of 100 requests a second. It kills my bandwidth and renders the server completely inaccessible until it stops.
I'd ban the IP range, except that it's coming from the local college campus, which is the site's primary audience... so unfortunately that course of action just isn't feasible.
I've try hunting around for solutions, and have found several requests for help with similar problems. Unfortunately, none of them had much in the way of advice. Any ideas?
2 AnswersProgramming & Design1 decade agoWebsite monitoring service?
Does anyone know a free or relatively low-cost website monitoring service? I've found many that will monitor server uptime, but nothing that seems to monitor average pageload times, and my boss is really on my case to get stats on how fast our sites are loading. I've googled just about every search term I can think of, but keep coming up empty handed.
4 AnswersProgramming & Design1 decade agoHelp with MySQL insert query?
I'm having some trouble with an insert using a subquery. I have it half working... my problems start when I try to add information into additional fields that aren't pulled by the subquery.
What I have right now:
INSERT INTO `phpbb_users`
(user_id, username, user_password, user_regdate, user_email, user_website, user_from, user_avatar)
(SELECT u.id, u.forum_user, u.password, UNIX_TIMESTAMP(u.date_created), u.email, p.web, p.hometown, u.avatar FROM users u JOIN profiles p ON u.id=p.user_id WHERE u.id = 4)
Now that all works just fine. But I also need to add info that isn't already stored elsewher in the database into some additional fields in the phpbb_users table. So I came up with this:
INSERT INTO `phpbb_users`
(user_id, username, user_password, user_regdate, user_email, user_website, user_from, user_avatar, user_avatar_type, user_notify, user_notify_pm, user_popup_pm, user_timezone, user_attachsig)
((SELECT u.id, u.forum_user, u.password, UNIX_TIMESTAMP(u.date_created), u.email, p.web, p.hometown, u.avatar FROM users u JOIN profiles p ON u.id=p.user_id WHERE u.id = 4), 2, 0, 0, 1, '-5.00', 1)
Unfortunately, this gives me a syntax error, and I'm not sure where my syntax is screwed up. If it helps, the error I'm getting is as follows:
#1064 - You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '(SELECT u.id, u.forum_user, u.password, UNIX_TIMESTAMP(u.date_created), u.email,' at line 3
5 AnswersProgramming & Design1 decade agoBest candy to hand out?
I tend to go a little overboard on Halloween, so this is just sort of a suggestion survey. I give out full size candy bars... last year I mostly did Hershey's and 3 Musketeers, but it I time it right this year, I can get a good deal on other kinds. What should I go for? What kind would you like most in your treat bag?
16 AnswersHalloween1 decade agoAnyone know what this plant is?
I moved into my house a little over a year ago, and this plant was growing when I bought the place. The previous owner had inherited it from the people she bought it from and didn't know what it was either.
The flowers are huge... some more than 8 inches in diameter. See picture:

9 AnswersGarden & Landscape1 decade agoAnyone know this song?
The video for it came out in the 80s (maybe early 90s), and featured a woman or guy in drag, shoplifting by stuffing food under her dress. Does anyone know what song this was?
