What should I do?
If you are in the mid-40's and hold a degree but it is extremely difficult to get an admin job. Lots of people would say, this is unbelievable but it is true. It has been found that some employers ask- have you done travel arrangement, SAP system, Powerpoint etc. If you have not done any of these in your previous jobs, no one is willing to offer you the job. Even temp jobs all require relevant skills too so it is difficult to get a temp job too even you want to try something new or gain new skills.
Should I just settle for the fast food restaurants- flipping burgers, retail assistant, cashier, road sweeper? I guess these places won't want me either.
What to do? I am so frustrated.

Most places want people with experience as they don't want the cost or take the time to train someone up.
Most places also don't want people who want to try something new. They fear that if they don't like it, you will leave and they'll have to pay out to recruit again.
Try temp jobs that don't require experience. Once you get into place you might find you get a chance to take on new skills.

If you find that a lot of jobs require the same skills and experience with the same office software, contact your local adult school and/or community college about getting those skills and the experience. There are usually some evening and week-end classes. As long as there is breath in your body, it's not too late to learn what you have to learn to get the job you want. Show some initiative and stop thinking of all the reasons you can't get it done - and just do it!
Source(s): I was down-sized out of my administrative job and had a heck of time getting work due to all the down-sizing everywhere. I was pushing 40 years old and thought about going back to school but there were a lot of obstacles - like the fact I had to support myself and would have to go to school part-time and it would take 3 or 4 years ...but, if I didn't go back to school, in 3 or 4 years I'd still have no new skills and be looking for a good-paying job. I went back to school.
